Architectural Woodwork Institute News:

Quality Certification Program (QCP) Representatives are links to other professional architectural woodworkers who generously share their knowledge. QCP Representative Shows Leary says, "The best part about my QCP participation is the networking I have established throughout my North American travels. I not only get to share my knowledge of the Quality Standards with fellow woodworkers, I have the privilege to meet the many successful business people and proud QCP members who in turn share their collective knowledge with me, which I can then pass on to others. This free exchange of information is one of the guiding principles of AWI and the QCP is a great way to continue that tradition."

TECH TALK: MELAMINE CABINETS

MELAMINE CABINETS

Congratulations you won the bid! The spec. for laminate cabinets calls for Premium Grade work. Due to value engineering, the architect agrees to allow "melamine cabinets".  When the cabinets show up with melamine drawer boxes, the architect rejects the drawer boxes. Unless the value engineering proposal accurately details cabinet box and drawer box changes, the architect will have the right to expect Premium Grade drawer boxes inside or Premium Grade cabinets fabricated out of Custom Grade melamine materials.

Section 400B-T-1 of the Quality Standards Illustrated, 8th edition, covers the materials for laminate cabinet "box" parts, exposed, semi-exposed and concealed surfaces. According to the QSI, melamine is not allowed for the exposed surface of Premium Grade cabinets. Furthermore, drawer boxes are not a part of this section. Drawer box materials are covered in section 400B-T-5.

So, when value engineering, be sure to indicate whether or not you are including drawer boxes as part of the spec. change. Keep in mind you are still making a Premium Grade cabinet but with a blend of Custom Grade material. All tests and tolerances for Premium Grade are still in effect.
